Travel childcare

Institutions or funding bodies must have a portion of funding available to be used for caregivers who need to find replacement care at home or at the travel destination.

At the levels of PhD student and above, the largest issue that needs support is the combination of work travel and childcare. We have all had difficulty getting any form of childcare either provided or reimbursed when traveling.

As travel and conference work is part of our job, then this should be something that institutions already have policies in place for.

​

Therefore there needs to be an easily accessible, obvious way of funding replacement childcare when academics travel.  By assuming that everyone has that childcare, you are passively discriminating against people who do not.

​

This would benefit all parents, and should be adapted to those who have other caregiving duties like elder care or partner care.
